Super skinny mannequin

New York’s high-end lingerie company La Perla was recently forced to remove an unhealthy looking super skinny mannequin, when an image of it was tweeted by Michael Rudoy with the hashtag #notbuyingit.

The image of the mannequin, which clearly showed it’s protruding rib cage, prominent hip bones and concave stomach, went viral; resulting in wide spread condemnation.

The mannequin was labelled ‘scary skinny’, ‘unacceptable’, ‘irresponsible’ and ‘harmful;’ for its promotion of an unhealthy body size and detrimental effect on body image.

After swiftly removing the mannequin, La Perla responded via Twitter:

"We have an update on this issue: The mannequin photographed has been removed from the store and will not be used again by any La Perla boutique. We are in the process of redesigning all La Perla stores with a new concept image and the mannequins that are currently displayed in our US stores will no longer be used..."

It’s rather disquieting to think that La Perla thought it was perfectly acceptable, to have such an unhealthy looking mannequin, take pride of place in their store front.

Interview - Media's effect on female perception

June's article outlines our interview, in which we responded to 7 questions, posed by a university student:

1. Do you believe women are portrayed in a negative way in print advertising?

2. Do you believe women are perceived in an unrealistic way in glossy magazine advertisements?

3. Do you believe the field of advertisement is male dominated where female are victim of popular culture?

4. Do you believe young females see the models in advertisements as role models?

5. Do you believe advertisements help create unhealthy lifestyle habits for young females and women?

6. Do you believe advertisements in magazines use undignified images of females as medium to persuade an audience to purchase products?

7. Do you believe the images of women in advertisements influence young women to aspire to look like the ‘Ideal women’ the media tries to portray?

Why I refused to put a shirt on

This blog post caught my attention this week. It outlines one woman's desire to show her real body, after significant weight loss, to the readers of Shape magazine. Shape initially contacted her online.

The blog outlines the email exchanges that centred on a picture of her bikini clad body and her thought about them:

Why I Refused to Put a Shirt on For Shape

A week or so ago Shape magazine online reached out to me. They wanted to do success story feature on their site about me. Being someone who enjoys putting herself out there and finding new ways to reach people, I agreed.

We set up a time for an interview and I sent them the following after picture to include.

The reporter got back to me and said: Thank you! These should work but I’ll let you know if my editor needs anything else. Talk to you soon!

We did the phone interview and chatted for about a half hour about my journey, my weight loss tips, and other things. She was super friendly and I enjoyed talking to her. She let me know that she would work on my piece and get back to me as soon as she knew when it would be published. I figured I’d here back in the next week or so, when only a couple of days later, I got the following email:

Hi Brooke!

So great to speak with you the other day. My editors were hoping you could send over a different after photo. (You look ah-mazing, of course, but they are looking to include one with a shirt.)

Thanks

Really? Have you logged on to Shape’s website lately? You can find MANY women in bikinis on the site.

I’m not going to lie, I was absolutely furious with the email and while I wanted to call them every name in the book and tell them how they were wrong. My inner lady (and help of Emily) spoke up and conducted a response:

Lily Allen 'bored' with weight talk

Lily Allen’s recent return to music and the public stage, has lead to much speculation. The speculation unsurprisingly concerned the relaunch of her music career and also, much to her annoyance, her significant weight loss.

This week, clearly fed up with the media’s preoccupation with her weight, Lily Allen told Petra (a German magazine):

"I am bored of people talking about how much I currently weigh ….., I have two children, I quite like eating; I will never have the figure of a supermodel, but that's OK with me."

Commenting on the demands of her busy life and fitting exercise into her schedule, Ms Allen said:

"There are worse things than coming home after a long day and not wanting to work out for two hours."

The sexual exploitation & objectification of Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus’s latest video has alarmed me for one reason and one reason only. It screams sexual exploitation.

Throughout the video Miley is virtually naked, she also looks blank, lost and alone.

Here she is clearly being depicted as a 'sex kitten':

Here her hands are tied behind her back and she has a rubber like tape wrapped around her neck; with both ends being held/controlled (left and right) by unknown persons outside of the shot:

In this disturbing scene Miley is sexually objectified, her body divided into parts. She has black rubber tape on several parts of her body and white rubber tape around each thigh. The tape is controlled /pulled by persons unseen.

In the disquieting (to say the least) video, we also see her i) silenced, by having her mouth taped:

and ii) tied to/hanging on a line; reminiscent of meat in an old fashioned butcher shop.

The singer was recently released from hospital and underwent a period of  “doctor’s care.”  She will resume her BangerZ UK tour tonight.

Miley's personal and professional life looks like it needs a lot of care and attention. I sincerely hope that she gets all the help and support she needs.
