I do not normally post anything about the views of a political
party, but in this instance I will make an exception.
This week the Lib Dems front-bencher Jo Swinson stated that they were against certain type of airbrushing in the media.
More specifically, the Lib Dems want to ensure that people who appear in advertisements aimed at under-16s are neither airbrushed or enhanced to make them look more attractive.
Jo continued 'For adults, while banning is less appropriate because they obviously donít need the same level of protection, advertisers should be honest and upfront about it. They should say on the advert ĎWe have retouched this. We have done X, Y and Z.í'
Adverts featuring the model Twiggy for Olay face cream (heavily airbrushed before publication), was singled out for criticism.

The Food Standards Agency is calling for manufacturers to reduce
the size of chocolate bars by 20% , thereby reducing the calorific content of
chocolate snacks. By 2012, the agency is proposing that the standard-sized bars
should be no more than 50g. Currently, Mars bars are 58g and twin Bounty bars
are 57g. In addition manufacturers are being asked to sell bite-size bars as
single items, of 40g or under, instead of in multi-bar bags.
At the same time companies are being discouraged from advertising giant-sized bars, while being encouraged to promote lower-calorie treats. Restrictions on the size of carbonated drinks were also put forward recently as part of the consultation with the food industry.
The purpose of the initiative is to reduce the growing levels of obesity by limiting processed sugar and saturated fat intake.

Speaking personally, I think the focus should be on education across all age groups. Reducing the size of bars etc reeks of the government saying that they canít trust the general public to make the right choices, so they will force change on us.
Itís similar to current discussion to significantly increase the cost of alcohol, thus forcing a reduction in intake for all except those who can and are willing to purchase it, whatever the price.
